EirGen Pharma assistance to victims of earthquake in Haiti
Following the devastating earthquake in Haiti on January 12th 2010, EirGen immediately set about the organisation of a shipment of essential medicines to an aid agency already working there called Partners In Health (PIH). PIH is a Boston, Massachusetts-based non-profit health care organization dedicated to providing a "preferential option for the poor". It was founded in 1987 by Dr. Paul Farmer, Ophelia Dahl, Thomas J. White, Todd McCormack, and Dr. Jim Kim. Using EirGen’s extensive contacts in the pharmaceutical industry, the drugs were sourced in India and a shipment was prepared which included antibiotics and pain medication valued at over 10,000 US Dollars. The shipment was routed from India to Port-au-Prince, Haiti via Miami, Florida. It is hoped that the medicines we donated will go in some small way to relieve the suffering of the people of Haiti.
In a separate initiative, Patsy Carney, Managing Director of EirGen Pharma, took part in a sponsored “Paddle for Haiti” on March 27th which involved a canoe trip around Tramore bay in Waterford which raised over 11,000 Euro for Trocaire, an Irish aid agency active in Haiti.
